The SWE community exposed me to opportunities to network with professionals. Throughout the guest speakers, I can relate to their experiences and ask them questions about this field. SWE helped me understand what I want to pursue and provided a supportive community to expand on my interests.

Major/Year:
Civil Engineering, Junior
Email:
swesdsueventscoordinator@gmail.com
Hometown:
Saigon, Vietnam
Internship/Job Experience:
EOPOS Outreach Assistant, URC Student Assistant
What inspired you to choose your major?:
I've always been interested in the field of engineering, where you get the chance to solve problems and needs in our community through designing and creating solutions that will benefit the people in the long run. I chose Civil Engineering in particular because I saw how vital of a role it has in people's lives, despite it being on the background. Civil Engineering is what enables a city to connect and function, through the roads and freeway systems, the water and sewage system, the railroad system, etc. When you look at a building, there is so much more that went into the process of planning and designing it than just the building itself. You have to take into account the characteristics of the land, how the water system should be, and so much more. That is what Civil Engineering is all about, it's the foundation that makes up our infrastructure and city, and I want to be a part of it.
How has SWE impacted you?:
SWE has given me the opportunity to step out of my comfort zone and interact with my peers here at SDSU. By participating in SWE events, I've gotten the chance to listen to many women professionals in STEM and that has served as a great inspiration for me. And this coming semester, I look forward to serving as SWE's events coordinating officer and the learning opportunities to come.

What inspired you to choose your major?:
I wanted to help others and not need to deal with lots of people. I love math and I've always been fascinated by architecture so I decided to study civil engineering.
How has SWE impacted you?:
SWE has let me meet new people and adapt to life in college. SWE has helped me grow and provided a support network for me.

Internship/Job Experience:
  • Research assistant under Professor WenWu Xu at SDSU
  • Research assistant under Dr. Samuel Kassegne at SDSU
  • Taught K-12 students and focused on children with behavioral difficulties
What inspired you to choose your major?:
I chose engineering because of my love for STEM.  Due to personal experiences,  I wanted to  change approaches taken in the medical field. I always had an interest in math and physics, but I wasn't exactly sure how to apply it in a way that would impact people in the medical field. After researching, I found the major that fit my interest. Once I actually took classes, I knew it was exactly what I was meant to do. I hope to inspire other women of color to be the change we hope for in society.
How has SWE impacted you?:
SWE has allowed me to feel supported in a male dominated field. It can be very easy to feel isolated being a female Engineer given its population. Organizations like SWE have helped myself and others find the support needed to keep pursuing these male dominated fields. SWE has also provided many network opportunities. During these events, I have met wonderful people that began just like me. They inspire me to keep pursuing my passions.
